About Gordon (b. 1984, Thurso) graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone, University of Dundee in 2006 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art 1:1.
Gordon currently lives in the north of Scotland.
The inspiration for most of my work comes from nature and the sea. I'm interested in the fantasy and folklore that surrounds the natural world and inventing an alternate view of humans place within it. My work has a whimsical quality that comes from the themes I choose and how I appropriate different subjects together; unlikely groupings of animal, fish, plant and people combined with a disproportionate sense of scale alluding to unusual new ecosystems and startling narratives.
I depict two very different extremes in my painting; one that is serious and thoughtful; the other is spontaneous and ridiculous. I make images for their visual affect and meaning tends to come as an afterthought, this allows me to exploit the narrative element and work more freely. I don't feel the need to make all my work understandable preferring to leave it up to the viewer's varied interpretation.
